Certified Specialist of Spirits Exam Prep & Exam (CSS)

The Society of Wine Educators Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS) is a new designation recognizing an understanding in the fundamentals of distillation for Cognac, Armagnac and other brandies; Scotch, Bourbon and whiskeys; vodka, rum, Tequila, gin; and liqueurs and other flavored spirits. To successfully pass the exam you must understand the production, maturation, and distinguishing characteristics of type of spirit. We will taste 4-6 spirits in each class.
The examination takes one hour and is comprised of 100 questions, all multiple choice. Candidates must score 75% or above to pass. Successful candidates will receive a Certification upon completion, a CSS lapel pin, and the ability to use the post nominal “CSS” as part of their professional title.

The Spirits Certificate course offers an overview of the World’s spirits and liqueurs. The course focuses on the production of: Cognac, Armagnac and other brandies; Scotch, Bourbon and whiskeys; vodka, rum, Tequila, gin; and liqueurs and other flavored spirits. Tasting and assessment is part of every class, we will taste 4-6 spirits. A one-hour examination includes 50 multiple-choice questions and a theoretical tasting note of one spirit or liqueur.
